Model Number: HP Pavilion Notebook - 15 - ab153nr

My laptop currently has 5400 rpm hard drive inside of it and it is extremely slow. One day, I was scrolling through Youtube and I found this video explaining how to add another hard drive or a ssd in place of the optical drive of a laptop. Desperate to make this thing any faster I was wondering if I could just get a ssd, put it in place of the optical drive then make it my boot drive. I understand I need a caddy and such, I was just wondering if this would be possible. Also, I do realize there may be some sort of bottleneck using this method since it could be SATA 2 port (unsure) but I was going to get a cheap ssd for it anyways.

Looking at the service manual, it really doesn't look that bad to replace the HDD. You have to remove the battery and optical drive, both of which look to be trivial, and both of which you'd obviously have to do if you wanted to swap out the optical drive anyway. After that, it's just removing half a dozen screws to remove the bottom cover and expose the HDD bay.

Why you are making things complicated. If you need a faster drive just throw your current lapptop HDD away and buy a SSD and just install it in place of your old HDD. Now a optical drive also uses sata 3 at least to communicate with your mobo. And also requires similar type of power to work properly. So theoretically it should work but not worth because better option will be to remove the old HDD and install the new ssd. Many ssd comes with clowning sw as well and you can clone your current drive in it. However it is better to clean install windows. SSD will also improve your lappys battery life.

I would love to replace my hdd with the new ssd however if you search up my laptop's model number you can see that the replacing process is quite difficult for a beginner like me and I wouldn't want to risk the chance of breaking it either. I don't know why HP makes their laptops like this that honestly prevent average users from upgrading. Anyways thank you for your information.

Then take help from some one who has experience. If you open it for at least once, you can do it again. It will improve your confidence. However I do not recommend you to mod your OCD for a SSD.
