My last gaming keyboard was a Saitek Eclipse. After that died I've been using cheap-o crap keyboard and I'm sick of them.

Everything now is mechanical and every time I test one in a storeI just don't like it. I like quiet keys, and even the 'silent' aren't silent. I like the nice soft and quiet bottoming out of a rubber dome when I type.

Until I can convince myself that the premium is worth the noise that comes with mechanical switches, I'm looking for a non-mechanical gaming keyboard.

I like a short travel to keys, but NOT chiclets short. 10-key pad required.

I briefly owned a Logitech G105 that I had bought on sale half price. I found it to be pretty good, but there were some shortcomings that prompted a return:
5-key multikey is pretty weak.
There is a pushed out front to the keyboard that prevents use of a wrist rest and it didn't come with one molded to fit.
The G keys weren't something I really needed, and I constantly hit G1 instead of escape since THAT was the top/left most key.

I'm thinking the CORSAIR K55 might be the best bet, but I'm open to other suggestions. I've also never tested a K55 so I don't know what to expect. Amazon reviews say the keys have a long travel, and that would be disappointing.

to be honest, if you want a keyboard that lasts, get a mechanical... They really aren't that much louder as long as you get the right keyset. the ones in stores are typically all blues (loud) I have browns and honestly, aren't much louder than my old logitech g510. The quality feels better and definitely isn't overly loud. The loudness really isn't there on these. To give perspective, my roomate and I both have gaming keyboards, he has blue, I have browns, his you can hear all around the house, mine you can't hear over game noises/movies/shows/music. And when playing online his keypresses can be heard through voice chat, mine can not unless I'm slamming my keys.

I considered the Corsair Strafe with Cherry Silent keys, but it still begs the question: why would I pay two to four times as much for a keyboard styled to be as much like a non-mechanical in feel as possible?

I've had exactly one keyboard fail in my life, and that was the Saitek. It failed for electrical reasons. I've used rubber domed keyboards that have literally lasted decades. That's with gaming and typing at 80+ wpm.

I have my doubts that mechanical keys would outlast that. Even if they did, would they last 2-4 times longer? And would you want them to?
