Should I update BIOS?

Hi guys, I’m currently using ASUS MAXIMUS RANGER VIII (8). I recently brought it into a computer repair store and they said my bios was from 2015, which could be causing my frames promblems and overall performance and such to go down. Overall they were hesitant to update because speccy was reading GPU or CPU at 89 Celsius but when he touched the heat sink it burned him. He said there’s a possibility to break the entire system, but they don’t know wether it is 50-50 or 0%. Is this update worth it? I can barely play low needed resources games with it.

Given your card and motherboard, I would not expect the BIOS update to have any effect (but it might). I would expect the card to be fully compatible with that motherboard out of the box. I would also look at any other reasons why the graphics card would be running that hot (dust/poor air flow).

Unless a BIOS update specifically states that it resolves an issue you are experiencing, there is no point in performing the update. Since version 3504 does mention improved VGA Compatibility, there is a possibility that the update would improve performance, but since you didn't mention WHAT graphics card you have or any of your other computer specs, it's hard to say.

Even on csgo I’m barely hitting 120 fps on very low and can not even run PUBG and it looks very choppy, from people I looked up with the same specs they are getting 250-280 fps constantly on high/medium settings.

Update bios went fine, he wants to try moving the heat sink. Can Anything bad happen from this if I let him?

As Wolfshadw stated, a BIOS update falls into the "If it ain't broke, Don't fix it" category. You should only update a BIOS to A: correct a known issue or incompatibility or B: to gain additional functionality, such as support for a new CPU. There is some other issue if the only symptom is an overheating GPU. How old is the 960? If it is several years old, you might need to replace the thermal paste on the GPU heatsinks.

Something bad can always happen even when professionals are working inside computers. Is he talking about removing the CPU heatsink or the graphics card heat sink?
