Overclocking a GTX 1080 for PUBG?

Hello, I am getting poor FPS (or at least lower than expected) with my build, here are my specs:
Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 1700 clocked at 3.64GHz
Motherboard: Asus PRIME B350 Plus
RAM: 2x8GB (16GB) Ripjaws V clocked at 2800MHz
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Gigabyte Windforce OC, 8GB GDDR5X
CPU Cooler: Corsair Hydro H60, 120mm
PSU: EVGA Super Nova NEX750B 750W

I am getting around 90FPS in PUBG, and a friend with same graphics card but with an intel i7 7700 is getting 144.
I would like to know if I should overclock my GPU or my CPU to get better FPS, like I showed on my specs, im running liquid cooling on my CPU, I´d like to take advantage of my 144hz monitor.
Im very new to overclocking, only thing that I know is that I can use MSI Afterburner to overclock my GPU, but I dont know what is the best config that wont wear my GPU.
I would appreciate any help, thanks! :)

Did you try the tweaks one at a time? I know it's lengthy, but anything like this is always going to be a process of elimination.

I'd recommend using both Windows Task Manager and a monitor such as MSi Afterburner throughout to get an idea on CPU, RAM and GPU usage. This might help narrow it down.

So, I don't know much about overclocking, but I don't think that is the problem as overclocking generally doesn't provide that much a boost in FPS. Now it could be due to the fact that your friend has an Intel processor but I don't think that is the problem. It might just be that he is running it on lower setting than you are. However, as you said before, using MSI afterburner might boost the FPS.

More likely it is your monitor. Your friend may have a monitor at 1080p 60Hz and you have a monitor that is 1440p and 144Hz. This would decrease your performance because your GPU is working harder to give you the better resolution.

Good Luck and Hope this Helps!

Hello, thanks for your opinion, my friend is running 1080p 60Hz, and im running 1080p 144Hz, intel is better for single core performance, but I think maybe overclocking my CPU will help close the gap,

90FS is what I get with my I7-4790K with a GTX970.

run HWINFO and set it to run as sensor mode, and play the game then quite game and look at max temp on your GPU I am wondering if your having temperature throttling.

Thanks, will do right now and come back :)

Just played the game for around 20 minutes, when I tried to come to tomshardware.com it would show me "access denied", so I had to restart the PC

But im back, so, I made the HWINFO test with the sensors, the sensors detected the max temp at 75°, fans running at 62%. I dont have picture because I had to restart the PC for tomshardware to work, dont know if that temperature is good or bad

EDIT: Played some more to get a screenshot of the monitor, here it is:

As for your connectivity issues;
looks like your DNS serve is flaking out on you, I suggest you right click on your network icon on your desk top toolbar (near clock) select "open network and internet settings" in the new window click on change adapter options then right click on your network adapter, select properties , in the new windows highlight internet protocol tcp/ip v4, then press on the properties button, where it says obtain DNS, use the bullet that says " use the following dns server addresses" and enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, click ok, reboot your computer and try your internet again

I don't think overclocking is the answer here. There's nothing wrong with overclocking, but it will not close the gap that much. This more likely comes down to lack of PUBG optimisation still at this stage.

There are some things I would try, however. Best to do them 1 at a time and see if you get results.

Firstly, make sure your power settings are set to High Performance. This is VERY important with Ryzen CPUs. See more on this here: https://community.amd.com/community/gaming/blog/2017/03/14/tips-for-building-a-better-amd-ryzen-system?sf62307686=1

Next, not sure what your PUBG setting are, but in some cases lower graphics settings will make your frames worse.

Start with these:

Textures: Ultra
Anti aliasing: High
View distance: High

All others at Low. Begin here and experiment a little.

Also try giving this a shot in PUBG's launch settings, it helps some but not all:

-useallavailablecores -malloc=system -force-driver-type-warp -sm6 -dx11mt -pthreads 16 -maxvram=8192

Then try -sm5.1 or -sm4.1 instead of -sm6

These are easy to remove if it doesn't help, but I hope at least something here does! Let me know what if anything here helped, so that I may pass it on to others. I've also purchased an R7 1700 and a GTX1080 so I'm super interested!

I'll come back if I come across anything else that could improve FPS.

Thank you for the information, i will try all this when I get home from school and will update you, my settings are everything on low except view distance :)
