Hello.

I still have my i7 4790 and a r9 290 going solid with 16 GB of DDR3. I have adquired a 4k TV to use as a monitor, and I plan to upgrade the graphic card in the future to
be able to play titles in 4k with a reasonable framerate. So I have a pair of questions.

How long will the 4790 keep up so it doesn't hold back a new, potent gpu?
Does 4k run really at 30hz? If so, does that mean more than 30 fps wasted in games?

Thanks!

Sizzling is right the 200 series Amd cards didn't have Hdmi 2. There was an outcry as to why this decision not to include hdmi2 since rival nvidia at the time had offered it in thier 9 series. Club3d did devise an adapter to use displayport to hdmi2 for Amd 200 series.

PandaBear270, if you upgrade to a newer gpu as you describe in your op as potent :) the 1080ti SkyNetRising suggested is the most capable at 4k. If you prefer Amd they do include hdmi2 now.
i7 4790 is still very capable cpu. @4k most of load gets shifted to GPU anyway.
4k runs at 60Hz also. It depends on HDMI version supported by TV, GPU and HDMI cable.
Extra FPS are not wasted, you just can't see them.

Anyway - playing at 4k will require at least GTX 1080 (more likely GTX 1080 ti).

This is what appears in the TV description, so I assume I will be able to enjoy 60 Hz/FPS then :) ?

Yeah, I agree that card would be the best one. Too bad I am quite strapped for cash, so I find it rather impossible to obtain the 1080ti. I was looking at the 1070 or the 580, those are pretty much my roundabout limits. I do not mind disabling some settings here and there, I mostly play scenic games like Elder scrolls online or such, and I find myself staring more than often to walls :D

At any rate I would need to get a card the sooner the better since my brother needs one as well, and I plan to give him my 290.

Those two picks will be fine, not as strong as the 1080ti but will do much better vs what you have now. 1070ti is out so maybe consider that also.

Look at gpu reviews of the games you would want to play in 4k to give you an idea where to lean.
