Im trying to buy a new processor and a new graphics card or thinking of just going SLI 970s because i already have one. Atm i have an amd fx 8350 and i want to switch over to intel but also keeping my ddr3 ram which will probably be a problem with most new processors. Im going to need help with finding a mother board too. I was thinking of getting a 4790k. Thank you for whoever helps me.

My budget would be 500$ but please try to consider the sales that come out in december.

Current Setup:
750 watt 80 plus bronze certified
ATX case
amd fx 8350
MSI gtx 970
msi gaming 970 motherboard
16gb GSKILL ddr3

Solution
not much point of cycling older gen CPUs into your build if you have to pay for it.

New gen are all the way. intel 6 core lineup i5-i7.

Keep your parts, swap in NEW CPU/MOBO/RAM and you're good for a while, Upgrade GPU later when the 20xx nVidia cards come ;). Besides, that 970 still has decent performance for today, no prob.

maybe win10 would be needed too if you do not have? This just a rough idea to give you something to think about since you seem a little unsure of direction. Also, I took the 8700 cuz if you look around at some benchs and real test results, it's Turbo frequency really kicks butt! and the 6 extra HT are a big plus over time

Thank you gussrtk i did do some research on processors and that processor is really good. i think you idea is a great idea and im gonna use it so thanks for your help!

also last thing, the processor says its memory type is DDR4-2666 would that matter with the 3000? the Motherboard supports it.

as you probably found, the 2666 ram is about the lowest speed you want for 8th gen CPUs, but having just a small price mark up on 3000-3200 would increase overall performance as long as motherboard supports those speeds. The ram at 3000 (for example), would be OC speed for any motherboard, and would have to be set manually once you have everything running. The lower 2666/2400/2133 speeds are standard and take no further tweaking to achieve their speeds.

The 3000-3200 just gives you a little better future set up as well as some small gains here and there for your system, but make sure to look under motherboard memory support for 3000(oc) or 3200(oc) depends on whichever you take.

Hope that answers your question?
