I got a new SSD, Samsung evo 850 500g, because my hard drive was running out of space, 1tb, how do I move my OS and a few select programs and games to the SSD without migrating all of the data on my old drive. Do I also need to use an external usb to sata cable at any point to first transfer the data or can I just install it into my computer internally and transfer there?

Solution

Once you get the current actual used space to below that 425 number....do these steps exactly:

Specific steps for a successful clone operation:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off...

You can't move "my OS and a few select programs".

1. Desktop or laptop?
2. How much space is consumed on your current C drive?

Best is not to move windows from HDD to SSD. Just reinstall windows and programs used on SSD and keep other data on HDD.
If you really want you can use Acronis to copy (backup & restore) only one partition over new hdd.

Cloning from HDD to SSD is fine, assuming the relevant conditions work.

I have used 900gb on my hdd and I have a desktop, and you're saying I cant just select certain things I either transfer all or reinstall those programs on the ssd?

Correct. There is no "pick and choose".
For a cloning operation to a 500GB drive, you need to get the actual used space to be well under 500GB.
Like around 425GB max.

Do a deep investigation on your current drive, and see what is actually taking up that space.
The OS and applications don't really take up a lot.
What does is games, video, music, stuff like that.

Do you have another drive handy, to move some stuff to?

I found an extra external hard drive checking to see if it has enough space for my current hard drive, I'm guessing that you're implying that I move all of the data I want to keep to that hard drive making enough space to move around 425gb to the ssd correct. and if I do that I then just have to go to bios and set the ssd to 1st boot up right?

Once you get the current actual used space to below that 425 number....do these steps exactly:

Specific steps for a successful clone operation:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe as necessary.
Delete the original boot partitions, here:
