Running BattleField 1 Temps

Would 90 degrees Celcius be too hot for an i7 7700K running Battlefield 1 at max settings (with a Cooler Master TX3 EVO)?

I monitor with HWMonitor, and saw temps getting up to 70 degrees for my GPU (MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X) and 90 for my CPU but questioned if it was wrong.

After looking on a thread I saw it was fine for intel to hit 90-95 degrees Celcius. But, a more recent thread said that the processor shouldn't hit 80 under load. I'm kind of wondering what's normal in my case.

Solution

Well, for that level of usage (with that cooler) those temps aren't exactly...

I would not want my CPU running that hot. What is your CPU usage while in-game, and GPU? What is the ambient temp in the room?
Does your case have adequate airflow?
Try ramping up the fan curve.

Do you have your CPU overclocked? Especially any auto-overclocks?

I have actually tracked and my CPU seems to run at about 4.3/4.4GHz (Standard clock is 4.2). So I do think it has something auto-overclocked. Room temps are quite low, it's freezing out here, however the airflow of my PC isn't the greatest (gonna have to work on that). CPU usage runs at about 80-90% ingame.

Nonetheless, is there any way to get it back to a standard 4.2ghz clocked?

edit: Another question, I have a pretty old psu: Corsair CX600 (Bronze efficiency), with fairly good components, is there any way my PSU could affect performance, or not at all?

Well, for that level of usage (with that cooler) those temps aren't exactly surprising.
That CPU usage sounds pretty high for that CPU in that game. Open up task manager and see If anything else is eating CPU resources.

The CPU running at 4.3/4.4 is just turbo activating. That alone shouldn't drastically alter temps.
However, you should enter the BIOS on your mobo. If you see anything with flame decals or some other design that would cater to children, make sure that is set to off. For whatever reason mobos like to apply over the top voltages for their auto-overclocks with kaby lake. Auto overclocks are rarely a good idea, but they are exceptionally bad with kaby lake. If you don't see anything like that in BIOS, try disabling turbo just for testing. You'd also do that in the BIOS.

7700k owner here, that plays BF1 a lot.....7700k runs hot. At stock, with a 140mm cpu cooler, mine ran hot too..reaching mid 80s C. And this was in a 25C room. Only solution I had was buy a big cooler or delid it. I chose the latter. In your case I'd just invest in a better CPU cooler. The 92mm fan that you have is on weak side, for a 7700k. I wouldn't want temps over 90C no matter what, even 80C seems really hot but passable.

What CPU usage do you get when playing BF1? He says he's using up to 90%, I might not have noticed but I don't think my 6700k ever worked that hard in bf1.

I disabled Intels Turbo boost, and I'm going to run the game for about 30 minutes with nothing open besides HWMonitor and Task Manager. To see if anything may have changed

I do usually have Spoitfy or YouTube open in the background by the way, but it doesn't take up that much.

As for what I am going to do in terms of investing money: I'm going to get a new case at first for sure. The airflow in my current PC is shit, and I do not have room to install a fan on the top for exhaust, and the fan in the back broke so there is barely any if any, exhaust. There is intake however, from the standard front fan that came with the Cooler Master K380.

So I first want to see if that eliminates the problem as it's a necessity, because this case in itself builds up dust like a crazy fucker. Thanks for all the advice anyways, appreciate it!

And to my disappointment the temps even nearly reach 100 degrees C on certain maps with Turbo Boost off, the usage of my CPU now is at about 75% and temps actually seemed to have increased

Well I haven't considered reapplying any thermal paste, but the reason behind that is because the CPU is only 4 months old. And I know I put in enough, so wouldn't it be kind of weird having to reapply already?

edit: I cleared my PC of dust and I'm going to check again, I replaced my PC from under my desk to onto my desk sort of next to my window, see if (with my lack of fans) this'll make a difference.

So I'm done with my ''benchmark'' if you will, and it seemed in the first couple of games, I completely overlooked one crucial thing. CPU cooler was spinning at idle temps...

So, it still isn't great for sure (temps currently average 85 degrees celcius, with a max of 90) but it's improvement. I guess to get rid of the remaining to get to an average of 80 I should invest in a better cooler/exhaust fan for better airflow.

Cheers for the help and advice buddy!

When I asked about reapplying and reseating it was cuz maybe one of the two was done wrong. And it is easy to check. If both done right then yeah you wouldn't need to redo it. I've had systems go 5yrs without redoing it.

You got lots of airflow in case? As many fans as possible is best. Some cases really choke the components.

No, I'm not gonna lie, I have terrible airflow, I have 1 front 120mm fan, but my only exhaust fan broke so I have to rely on my PSU for exhaust.

Besides from that, the case I have (CM K380) builds up dust like crazy.

That explains a lot. You have terrible airflow in your case and it is causing heat issues. I'd get a new case like Fractal Meshify C that has great airflow and lots of fans. This will help a lot. Temps will greatly improve. It seems that your case isn't getting cooler air in and hot air out.

Well I was thinking about buying the NZXT Phantom 530, as I also want to buy something like a Noctua CPU cooler to further decrease temps. and I want a pretty big case for it. Would the NZXT Phantom in terms of airflow do the job? (I'll probably buy 1 or 2 additional case fans for exhaust).

edit: with Noctua cooler I meant the Noctua NH-U9B SE2 to be more specific

Yes, the phantom series has awesome airflow. Great case in general :)

Well I definitely want something rather large, I did look at the Fractal Meshify C but it'd rather downgrade in terms of space. My current case in dimensions is:
(W x H x D) 209 x 445 x 479 mm / 8.2 x 17.5 x 18.8 inch

I want something that is a solid amount larger.
The Phantom 530 is (W x H x D) 235 x 572 x 543 mm
Could you recommend me any other case that comes close to those dimensions (my mobo is an mATX). That isn't as expensive as the Phantom 530?

Because all cases I had been looking at either barely gave me extra space, or didn't fit my Mobo (the big towers).

I really don't see why you'd want a big case. Only reason to get one is if you have multiple GPUs, a custom water cooling loop, and lots of HDDs. Otherwise smaller is better and gives plenty of air flow.

A mATX looks weird in a large case too. But if you wanted a full tower, how about the Phanteks Enthoo Pro:

I'll look into it, and yeah, I do want to (eventually) go for custom water cooling. I just need a decent alternate air cooling option in the meantime. Which is most likely going to be the Noctua NH-U12S or Cryorig H7.

The case, I'm not sure yet. The Phanteks Enthoo Pro looks good too, so I'll definitely look into it tonight. I don't really mind the weird looks either, as I rarely look into my case.

Nonetheless, thank you very much for all of the advice!

If it isn't about looks, but performance, then get a case with excellent front intake, not blocked like a lot of new cases. Tons of good mid tower options that will accommodate a custom loop. As for now, the Noctua and Cryorig will handle the 7700k just fine at stock.

I'm really considering the Phanteks Enthoo Pro, which seems perfect for airflow. Would the case require any alternate fans? Or are the 2 given fans (1x200mm intake and 1x120mm exhaust) good enough?
