CPU High Temp -> Low FPS

Hi, over the past few months i have noticed pretty high cpu temps, around 50-65C Idle and about 75C while gaming. It could be just me, but since last time I opened up csgo (about a year ago), my fps was about 100-200... now its about 50. I have seen high-performance decreases in pretty much every game. I have tried taking off the fan, wiping off the very old and nearly gone thermal paste, and reattached the fan onto the CPU. The cpu is a i3-4170.

You say you wiped off the thermal paste, did you re-apply it? Thermal paste is there to aid in heat transfer, and if you don't have any there then that is the cause for the increase in temperatures. You can go to any computer store and buy a tube for like $3-4 if you don't have any on-hand.

Yeah i'm thinking of doing that but im pretty sure many people run perfectly without any thermal paste, so i highly doubt that loss of thermal paste is the issue causing high temps and low fps.

...Sorry to say, but not having thermal paste does increase temperatures DRAMATICALLY. If people could run PCs fine without thermal paste, why would we have it in the first place? Even the best coolers need thermal paste to effectively cool a CPU.

The high temps affect FPS because the CPU is likely throttling under load, causing dips in performance to stay in line with temperatures. You'll see a pretty drastic drop in temperatures by applying thermal paste, so do that.

Applying thermal paste would help a great deal. It should completely solve your problem unless there is some other issue going on, but the chances of that are so low compared to not having thermal paste.

I just bought some thermal paste and applied it... seems like the temps may have decreased by only a few Celsius in idle, but it goes down to around 65 celcius when im playing csgo now.
