Hot Swap Boot Drive Options

Hi guys

So I'd love to be able to dual boot from an external SSD maybe once a week and later disconnect that SSD and put it into cold storage. The SSD has a valuable/sensitive environment so I keep the drive in my safe with encrypted system backups elsewhere.

I've tried using a USB 3 enclosure in the past but booting from an external SSD via USB 3 is slow and I always had to go into BIOS first before I could use it as a boot drive. It's much better to boot directly off the motherboard's SATA ports.

I could maybe use this hot swap bay to boot the SSD externally: https://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-com-Mobile-Backplane-2-5in-Drive/dp/B00XLB0KEQ/ref=sr_1_53?ie=UTF8&qid=1512237601&sr=8-53&keywords=hot+swap+drive+bay except my case has no space to fit it!

Does anybody have any ideas? Have you ever hear of anyone feeding the internal SATA data cable and SATA power cable outside the case somehow so that the motherboard is fooled into considering the drive as internal? Do SSDs have to be flat or can they hang? Somebody else must have wanted to boot from SATA externally but I can't seem to find the answer?

Thanks

Try using eSATA. You will probably need an add-in card or a slot thingy to convert from normal SATA to eSATA.
The drive is powered by an external power brick. Some are powered by USB.
