I currently have a very very ancient PC - a Packard Bell with intel core 2 quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.4GHz, 3GB RAM that is very slow and was wondering if I can upgrade it in any way (without buying a new PC). Can I upgrade the CPU to say a 2017 i5 and the RAM to 16GB? Thanks

Solution
It will be less of an upgrade and more like getting a new PC, since you'll have to replace at least the CPU, motherboard and RAM, but if that counts, yes, you can upgrade it. :D

What you can definitely keep (whether it makes sense is up to you): HDD(s), SSD(s), optical drive(s)
What you can most likely keep, depending on what you have: Case, fans & heatsink if any, graphics card
What you might be able to keep (but probably not): Power supply (and CPU, RAM, motherboard obviously)

taking into account its a brand name PC i doubt you would be able to make any significant upgrades to it that you would make any difference.as said above you would end up buying a new motherboard, RAM, CPU and maybe GPU depending on what you plan to use the PC for. you are better off scrapping it and buying a new PC if you plan to use it for anything major other then checking e-mail and web browsing.
