Upgrade from 6600k to ??? (Bottleneck issues gtx 1080)

Hello, im currently experiencing some bottleneck issues with my 6600k (oc to 4.3ghz) with a gtx 1080. i usually have 100% cpu usage, and i get stutters. i want to upgrade my cpu, but what do i upgrade it for? i have a good z170 motherboard. so would the 6700k be the best option? or should i consider visiting ryzen 5 or ryzen 7? thank you for thoughs and answer, and sorry for terrible english.

Considering the motherboard you have I'd probably upgrade to the 6700K or 7700K (update the BIOS). Just wondering what are you running in the background that causing such a high CPU usage, the 6600K should still be quite good.

only coffee lake i5-8600k or i7-8700k are meaningful upgrades. but you need new z370 mb.
What is your monitor and gaming res? I assume non-gsync. try vsync/adaptive vsync/fast sync to see if stuttering goes away.

There may be another issue here than a CPU bottleneck. For most games, the 6600k should not have an issue keeping the 1080 fed with data. Some games, such as BF1 are CPU heavy and those game will make use of the extra threads. But most games like really fast single core performance, which the 6600k has.

The 6600k is a great gaming CPU, so I would not say it is dead just yet as there may be another underlying issue. I would userbenchmark.com and see what it shows in the background of the CPU bench. As WildCard999 said, there may be a problem there.

I would go with the 7700k as an upgrade, if you need to upgrade. You will just need to update the bios and you can drop it in your current motherboard. There are some good prices right now for the 7700k too. As for Ryzen 5 or 7, unless you are using workstation type task, then there is no need. In most games, you will see lower fps in gaming with a Ryzen 5 or 7 over the 6600k.

I think i found it. corsair link 4 is eating up 65% of my processor right now. could that be the issue?

Yeah, shut down corsair link if it is running 65%. You may want to try uninstalling Corsair Link and reinstalling it. I have Corsair link on my rig and I don't have near that usage.
