Hello,
I'm good with my Pentium now, but will eventually want to upgrade to an i5 or i7.
At first my assumption was that as time goes on, the 7th gen will get cheaper and cheaper. However I am now reading that this may not always be the case.

When are prices of the previous generation generally at their lowest?

That's what I'm looking at. I am seeing the 6th Gen i7 going for 269, while the 7th Gen i7 is on sale for 249.
So is now the best time to buy, or should I wait until maybe Feb. or March of next year? Seems like all the processors were marked down super low this past February. IIRC I picked up my G4560 for 54 dollars and it is now 76...

Are you talking about buying new? If you look at what the 6700K did after the 7700K came out (Jan 2017), it went down ~$20 over the course then next couple months and then hasn't really budged since then. 7th gen may never be much cheaper than it is right now.

Thanks guys, I was trying to put it off with the holidays and all, but I have enough cash so will probably go ahead and pop in an i7 now.

One more thing; The 7700K is the same price as the 7700 right now, but my Motherboard doesn't allow overclocking. Will it still run in my Motherboard? I don't want to overclock now, but in case I ever did, I could always buy another motherboard...

SO just to clarify, the 7700 would come with a heat sink and fan, like my Pentium, but the 7700K only comes with the chip and no heat sink at all?

Or are you saying that it comes with a standard heat sink and fan, but I would need something better if/when I overclock?

I think you should wait. Why? The 8th gen ones are completely different from the 7th gen cpus and people are selling their stuff at a lower price due to this. An i3 of 8th holds as much power as that of an i5 of the previous gens. Try to wait for 3 months for the new cheap h370/b370 boards as that could further help in downgrading of processors like i5 7500/6600
