I just built an i7 7700k machine. I am using a Noctua NH-U14s cooler with the fan set to max at all times. I installed the cooler and applied thermal paste properly.

I am running stock speeds. No overclocking, unless you count enabling XMP.
I am seeing temperatures at idle around 28c. As soon as I open firefox or pretty much any other program the temp jumps to 40 or 50c and then back 30c in a matter of 2 or 3 seconds.
Is this normal from idle?

Running prime95 after 5 minutes temps shot up to 82c and I killed prime95. Is this normal at load?

Board: MSI Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon
Processor: i7 7700k
Memory: CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 (XMP Is Enabled. Timings and voltage manually set in bios)
Cooler: Noctua NH-U14s

Opening firefox etc, is not "idle" - and the odd spike, which normalizes to marginally above idle in seconds, is perfectly normal.

Prime95 versions greater than 26.6 also stress AVX instructions - which is not recommended, unless you use (extremely) specific AVX instruction-based workloads in your day-to-day use.

For "Thermal" testing, use 26.6

As for temps, you're definitely in the warm-hot range at 82'C, but that's directly related to the newer version of Prime95 you're running.

What are AVX instructions normally used for?
I will retry with prime95 26.6.
