CPU core temps seem strange

Just today I swapped my Core 2 Duo E8600 for a Core 2 Extreme QX9650. The TIM I applied during installation was Arctic Silver 5.

Now I know that AS5 has a 200 hour curing period, but my core temps seem a little off. Core0 and Core1 will have a temp difference between them that is anywhere between 5-9 degrees Celsius with Core0 being the core that is running hotter. Core2 and Core3 are about even give or take a degree and they run about 2-4 degrees Celsius hotter than Core1.

Could this be attributed to improper TIM application or is this normal and i should wait out the the 200 hour curing period?

Im just really unsure because this is my first time having to apply thermal paste myself instead of just using what came pre-applied on a CPU cooler

Core 0 will always run hotter than the rest of the cores on 99% of cpus. Core 0 takes the load first and then shovels the work onto the rest of the cores, therefore all the cores will have a different temp. Some people will use cpu package temps as that gives one temp to then compare and contrast but a more in-depth method is to compare and contrast core temps.

You shouldn't worry too much yet as it won't impact on performance. But I would run a load test to see if the temps equalise under synthetic load.

Thermal paste application only really impacts on temps by like 1 degree, and you can never have too much! as long as it doesn't flow over outside the socket!

I had a feeling that Core0 was running hot cause its the first core, so thank you for clearing that up. I guess I should do some stress testing and wait out a bit of the curing period before i start complaining seeing as I only just swapped CPUs like 3 or 4 hours ago
