Is my i5-4670k @4.8ghz enough for 4k Gaming

hello there,
i have stable i5 4670k running at 4.8ghz + EVGA OC 760 2-way SLI + 16g ddr3 Ram on asus Z87-A with seasonic 850W gold.
iam planning to get into the 4k gaming zone i'll buy an 1070ti/1080 "maybe SLI in future" & 4k LG 24 , but iam confused about upgrading my CPU since iam going for gaming only no streaming/video editing, or i have to get an i7-4790K?

While I would normally pick 1440p 144Hz the higher Hz and therefore higher target fps is likely to show the limitations of your cpu. Even with a 60fps cap my 4670k @ 4.3Ghz is running at near 100% across all cores in a few modern games and I do see occasional dips under 60. Although you have a higher OC I expect in the latest cpu heavy games your cpu will prevent you from acheiving an average 100 or more.

When you're increasing the resolution, you're putting more pressure on the graphics card, not the CPU, so going 4K with a 4670K at 4.8Ghz should be fine, however in more CPU intensive games, you'll probably start running into issues.

For now, its fine, for the future, you might want to go for an i5 8600K or a Ryzen 5 1600/1700. Or if you can afford it, a 8700K would be ideal in the future for CPU intensive games (aka open world games, racing simulators, etc..)

1. proc dependencies vary from game to game
2. on the same games, going higher resolution will put more strain on the GPU side, not proc.
3. if you aim 144fps, the constrains caused by nr.1 and 2 are simply higher.
4. for some new proc intensive games, older I5s do have more issues compared to I7s due to HT. incl. I5 4690k.
5. for 4k, go better for a single 1080Ti than 2x1070s or 2x1080s.
6. Your I5 should be able to survive for now but your GTX760 is indeed in deep need of upgrade especially for 4k.
7. if you wanna replace the I5 now, go directly for Coffee Lake or Ryzen.

Why not just go for a GPU upgrade and then buy the monitor afterwards? 4K gaming isn't that amazing in my eyes anyway, I much prefer the feel of 144Hz gaming.

Explore other options.

Already mentioned on point 6 about the upgrade only on GPU side:

Yup! I am also with your opinion, I went for 1440p 144hz instead of 4k.

Yeah I personally would go for 1440p 144Hz (Thinking of getting myself a 1440p 165Hz G-Sync dell monitor).

Seeing as my 4670k is only just holding 60fps in a few games I really doubt he can achieve 100fps in these games. Yes his cpu is clocked 12% higher but 60 to 100 fps is a 67% increase. I should clarify I'm not saying this is a bad gaming experience but he should manage his expectations that he will see his cpu as a far greater limiting factor if aiming for high fps.
