is RAM overclocking need when OC-ing the CPU

Hi Guys,

I don't know much about overclocking but got a ryzen 1700 station for rendering.
MOtherboard : ab350m-gaming 3 ..
Ram: 2x8gb 3000mhz Corsair savage
2x16gb Adata 2400mhz premier
I don't care about ram speed ..so I overclocked cpu to 3,6 and is runing stable 60degres on 100% load for hours.Ram is working on 2133
I tried 3.7mhz but after a while it freezes and shuts down..though temps don't show spikes..
So my questions is When overclock cpu do I need always to overclock the RAM too??

Well, I'll be honest, the jump from 2133 to 2400 is small. You'd have noticed it if you had 2666 and up though (e.g. 2400 to 3200 gives ~15% boost in intensive workloads).

As to where to adjust CPU voltage... I'd recommend searching for an overclocking guide for that motherboard and seewhether you can find it there.

You can overclock the ram and CPU seperate to eachother. One is not needed to be overclocked in order to overclock the other.

That said, if you are overclocking the CPU, you may as well overclock the ram aswell (if you can), as it also benefits performance in CPU intensive workloads.

Are you using those two RAM kits together?

Hi Rexper, Thanks for the answer ..""Also, your ram should be working at or around 3000MHz"' ..but 2x16gb is 2400mhz ram?..it can't get higher that could it? ..( 2x8gb is 3000mhz but i thought one channel is limitted by the other )

as I said I don't care about ram performance all I am trying to get 3.7 as people normaly get from that cpu ..ok I wil check about that xmp

The 32GB kit is specified to run at -2400 speeds, so it isn't guaranteed to work at a higher speed than that even if you try setting it to that speed (no, you can't run the 2 channels at different speeds afaik). You'll probably see crashes at speeds above 2400 MHz. So try setting all sticks to 2400 MHz first (should be the XMP profile of the 32GB kit).

Your PC crashes with the CPU @3.7 GHz most probably because higher clock speeds usually require higher voltages. So you'll have to increase the CPU voltage little by little until the PC gets stable. For a frequently used workstation, I wouldn't go higher than 1.35V on CPU voltage.

So it is not the RAM ? as I said I don't need and I don't want the ram to run higher than 2133mhz..Ok I will try higher voltage I have set auto voltage so I assume over 3.6 it is needed manual setup of the voltage

If your slowest RAM kit is specified to run at 2400 MHz, I strongly recommend to set your RAM at least to that speed. Due to the architecture of Ryzen, they benefit a lot from faster RAM (yes, it increases CPU performance too). Look up the kit you're using, and manually type in the speed and timings listed for it into the UEFI/BIOS. There's a very high chance that it will run flawlessly and it will increase overall system performance at no deficits at all.

For 2400 MHz speed, the DRAM voltage should stay at 1.2V - only from 2800 MHz and up should it require more than that voltage.

Yes BIos is upd to date the lates version. NOw I just made a test Irun a vray rendering test that had 1min:25 sek to render the scene ram was at 2133mhz ( cpu at 3.6)
I had the ram at 2400mhz and same result no boost in CPU performance.

I watched some clips about enabling XPM but strange in my bios there is no such option I can directly type the Mhz of ram..

I tried 3.7 at 2400 but still system freezing ..could figure out from where I should raise Voltage of cpu

I higlly doubt that is possible as far as 3d rendering in Vray is conserned : from cpu 3.1 to 3.6 i got scene to render from 96 seconds to 85 seconds so gain close to 10-12% gain in productivity from 15-17% uping clock in CPU ..I would bet 1% in the best :) ..but since my 2x16gb ram is limitted to 2400 I would need to remove it and test only with the 2x8gb which is 3000Mhz..

Ok I will searcg again for the voltage..though I couldn't find one yet
