Hey I have some questions about have two routers attached to one connection would work. I have a linksys that is too old to flash and a Nighthawk with dd wrt. First question, I want to have the Nighthawk as the VPN which I've already accomplished and I want linksys as basic internet. Is this as simple as setting the gateway for router two as the ip of one? Also will it slow connection going through the non dd wrt router? Thanks in advance!

Why would you not run just the newer nighthawk router.

Your ISP will only allow a single device connected to the modem since the only provide 1 ip. You can not use that IP on more than 1 router. That is actually is the main function of a router to share the 1 IP with other devices. If you could just assign it to multiple devices you would not even need the router.

Now if you mean you want to plug into the lan ports of the older router with your newer one you can do that. It will not cause much issues other than the double nat, but that is mostly a problem for people who use game consoles.
