Hello

Recently I bought all new hardware and I was hoping to continue using the HDDs I had in a previous computer, one of which with Windows 10 installed (I will boot from this). Currently, I have the PC working but without the correct drivers.

As i do not have a CD drive, to install the drivers from the discs I received, I would have to use my laptop to transfer the files to a USB stick and then plug that into the new PC. However, after transferring the driver installation setups and files to the PC, any setup/installation wizards will hang and never complete.

I tried downloading from the manufacturers websites too but the installations hang all the same. I know it is hanging because there is 0% CPU and HDD usage in the task manager.

I am unsure if the previous hardware's drivers are an issue as they will still be on the HDD I am booting from.

What should I be looking to do to get my pc in working order?

I appreciate all help anyone may give me on this matter because I am stumped.

Thanks.

MSI Z270-A PRO

Solution
Do a clean install.Otherwise you will have probs.

If you've got a windows key get the mediacreation tool and get the ISO. Download it then use rufus to put it on a flash drive

Will doing a clean install not make me lose the data on the HDD? I would very much like to avoid that

I do have a windows key for Windows 8.1. I am currently using Windows 10

Yes it will if youre installing on the old hdd. But unless you do things can and will crash. If the hdd was in an amd system.

Or an earlier Intel system

And you're using it in an Intel system now, because theyre different chipsets, different hardware and completely different drivers

I would say thats why it hangs

Yes it was previously on an AMD system and now on Intel. I see. Is there not a way to uninstall all previous drivers from the HDD to avoid the data loss?

Okay. Thanks for your help. I have enough space to move all data I need to other HDDs. Can I do this and then do a clean install on the HDD?

OR

I have 2 1TB HDDs and 1 525Gb SSD. Could I move the windows installation to the SSD without having this issue and boot from there, or is the same issue apparent?

Yup you can move whatever to the other hdds.

But you'll have to reinstall programs on the hdd you're installing windows on.

You cant copy programs to another hdd, then copy them back to the hdd you reinstall windows on. The programs wont work

No you can't copy a version of windows thats on another hdd to the ssd. If you're going to reinstall windows on an ssd, do a clean install

Whatever hdd you're going to reinstall windows on, unplug the others first. Reconnect them after windows has been reinstalled

I really appreciate your help.
Okay so I want to clean install on the SSD (which is empty because it's new), also meaning I dont need to move any data or reinstall any programs, correct?

Will this mean I will have to buy another copy of windows? And what should I do with the HDD in regards to it already having windows on it (Will it matter considering boot orders)?

Well you'll have to reinstall the programs that you want to use.

After you reinstall Windows. You may need another copy of Windows. Depends if it'll activate after you reinstall it.

Altho according to most of the posts in here if it's an OEM version of Windows, you'll have to buy another Windows dvd / whatever

if you want to use the other hdd as a storage disk format it. But if you want any docs / photos off it copy them to the ssd, after you reinstall Windows on the ssd first. And if the old hdd has the AMD stuff on it, you cant or shouldnt boot from it anyway.

Thats why you're reinstalling windows on the ssd
