DVI-d to vga adapter question

Solution
A dvi-I output will have 4 pins surrounding the spade pin.
They carry the analog signal to the 9 pin vga pins.
Without those 4 pins, you need some sort of a active converter to generate those analog signals.
I have seen active adapters with usb aux power that would do that job.
I do not know if it is possible that the other pins of the dvi-D connector can supply the power for that conversion.
Probably best to be certain that the product description explicitly says active and that reviews support that assertion.

Yeah, it does look an active one, that's where my confusion comes from, it looks like an active one, but it doesn't say that it is active, so I guess my question is, do the passive adapters look identical to active ones? (an example of an active one is linked in the other response)

I see, so unless it specifically says it's an Active adapter, I probably should avoid it. Thanks a lot for your answers, I'll get one of the active ones on Amazon.
