Hi, hello, I'm trying to build a better PC out of an old desktop I have. I have an HP Compaq dc5800 sff and I wanted to put a new proccessor in it but my question is will a newer processor work in this old motherboard? The cpu it has now is a Intel core 2 duo. Also is there a point where the processor will be too new for the motherboard? I don't want to Shell out a bunch of money and then more for a newer motherboard.

Solution
That board is specific to the HP DC5800 case, it will not fit an a standard off the shelf case.
The CPU cooler you currently have should work, and is also specific to that HP case (the heat sink literally screws into the case).

The fan for your heatsink isn't actually on the heatsink itself but in front of it at the front of the case, like this https://imgur.com/a/PBlDl
Red is Heatink, yellow is the fan

Not sure whats causing the blue screens, sounds like something is loose though.
This is a list of the CPU's supported, pulled from here https://h10057.www1.hp.com/ecomcat/hpcatalog/specs/provisioner/05/AK818AW.htm:
A BIOS update may be necessary for some CPU's
The fastest you can get is a Q9300 (A Quad Core), or a E8500 (Dual Core)

Intel® Celeron® Processor 420 / 430 / 440 / 450 (1.60 to 2.20 GHz, 512 KB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB) or Intel® Celeron® Dual Core Processor E1200 (1.60 GHz, 512 KB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB) or Intel® Pentium® Dual Core Processor E2160 / E2180 / E2200 / E5200 / E5300 (1.80 to 2.60 GHz, 1 to 2 MB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB) or Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E4500 / E4600 / E6550 / E6750 / E7200 / E7300 / E7400 / E8200 / E8400 / E8500 (2.20 to 3.16 GHz, 2 to 6 MB L2 cache, 800 to 1333 MHz FSB) or Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q6600 / Q8200 / Q9300 (2.33 to 2.50 GHz, 4 to 8 MB L2 cache, 1066 to 1333 MHz FSB);

Ebay and Craigslist are good for used CPU's

Thanks for this list it's very helpful. I should probably look into a heatsink with a fan then i presume? My pc only has a heatsink currently.

On a side note, I don't know if I should make a new thread but I wanted to look into moving my motherboard and everything into a bigger case, because whenever I bump my pc, it bluescreens, and I can only presume its because the GPU or internet adapter is coming loose due to lack of space. What size case would I need? From reading up, I think my motherboard would fall under the "Micro atx" catagory but there isnt 4 screw holes in each corner. Ive circled the where all the screw holes are to secure this specific motherboard (https://imgur.com/a/cCbkM).

Honestly im trying to build a pc as cheap as possible, as im trying to set up a pc to do online school to finish my diploma. Sorry if i'm not asking good questions, I just have never built a pc before.
