GPU having issues after five great years.

I have had my computer for about five years now and my trusted gtx 970 was almost problem free. Yesterday while playing a game my screen went black and my gpu fans started to spool down. I thought to myself, “this is the end”. The computer failed to reboot until I disconnected the GPU from the motherboard cleaned it and plugged it back in. I know it is a problem with the gpu because I tested my computer with my CPUs graphics and it worked just fine. It started working again but it crashes to random colored screens between every 45 minutes to an hour of it running. Any ideas of how to fix this? I read something about baking my gpu but does this even work? If not is my gpu toast? (No pun intended)

Many gpu's have come back to working condition after removing the old thermal paste from the cooler and applying new.

What kind of errors are you getting in your registry log files? It might help pin point the problem.

My most recent experience with random power outages was a "dying" MoBo battery. It doesn't cost much to check or change it.

check to see if your gpu has any warranty on it some vendors had life time warrantys. also check to see if your gpu was on a recall. some of the older nvidia cards did have recalls on them.

okay I would load HWINFO run it in SENSOR mode, scroll to the GPU, let it run in background, and run your game for a few minutes until pc crashed
reboot and load HWinfo again and look at the GPu MAX TEMP.

if is it over 85c likely need to inspect the thermal past/fan
