Was thinking about getting a 4790k i7 to replace my faulty 4670k, but then was considering maybe getting a new MB that supports newer generation CPUs, my MB is currently this one https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/Z87-GD65-GAMING.html.

Would it be a good investment now to upgrade that motherboard now with a newer generation CPU or just stick with a 4790k?

Seems if I get a new MB i'd also have to get new Ram as im using DDR3 currently.

Thanks for any input.

Solution
if all there is wrong is your cpu and not your motherboard, then go for the I7-4790K its powerful enough for AAA gaming not a problem, the i7-4790K average USED cost is about 280-325 USD.

for another 2-300$ you will be up to date. , but either way you will have a solid computer for year to come

performance on the i7 4790k is such that you can grab it and easily skip this current gen no issues
