Hey guys, been running this AMD FX 8320 for a few years now (mainly for gaming) just of late ive been noticing the cpu fan is getting rather loud. When checking the temp in HWMonitor or OCCT at full load i am getting 79 Degrees c and the core speed throttles from 3.5 > 1.4/5. I've disabled cool'n'quiet in bios but it still throttles.

Is it time to bite and bullet and upgrade to an i7 or i5 ?
or should i purchase and after market cooler ?

Full specs :
AMD FX 8320
12 GB RAM
GTX 1060 6gb
1TB HDD
2TB HDD
120GB SSD
730w Thermaltake SMART SE 80+ BRONZE CERTIFIED MODULAR PSU 14CM FAN ATX2.3 APFC

Thanks for any advice or help you can give.

Solution
Well the temps are beyond terrible ,72c on the core is throttling temp for fx chips.

A dirt cheap deepcool gamnaxx 300 will bring those temps right hack within spec (a gammaxx 400 would be preferred., b AF)

Upgrading to either will require a new motherboard aswell, My current motherboard is an AM3+ socket.
Should i switch to Intel or are the RYZEN CPU's as good ?

Yeah, your biggest problem is an upgrade would require a whole new platform. AM3+ is dead. So you would need a new CPU/mobo/RAM. None of those parts will be compatible with your current setup.

For gaming, Intel CPUs are better. But Ryzen CPUs are still very good, especially for workstation type task. If you just game, then I would go with the new Intel i5 8400. It is the new gaming king when it comes to price vs performance ratio. But it is a locked CPU. If you like overclocking and have more room in your budget, then go with the 8600k or 8700k. All three provide comparable gaming performance.

You are absolutely right! I am thinking Intel temps and not fx temps. 79C is really high.

If you are using the stock cooler, and it has been installed since day 1, perhaps the thermal paste has dried out and is no longer effectively allowing the transfer of heat from the cpu to the base plate of the cpu cooler. Try cleaning the old paste off and applying some new thermal paste. It should help you lower the temperatures. I would buy an aftermarket cooler, you don't have to break the bank. I use a Zalman on my FX6300 and it runs cool and quiet.

So I just bit the bullet and bought a new mobo/ram/cpu/paul and gpu with the plan of selling on my old stuff.

I bought an i7 7700
Gigabyte b250m-ds3h motherboard
16gb Crucial ddr4 ram
GTX 1070 mini 8gb
240gb Kingston ssd
600w Aerocool integrator psu

Now my problem is once I’ve built all this into my old case (I’ve experience building) I can’t get the thing to power on. I have put in my old 1tb and 2tb HDD as they have my games on. In the past I’ve known the problem to be the front panel connections, but I’ve been fiddling for hours now and just can’t get the thing to power up.

It came as a bundle package, just took off the things I didn’t want (case/HDD/cd drive/ windows 10) Do you think the psu could be the reason it’s not turning on ?

You still have the thermaltake psu ??

If so try it instead.

Unlikely to be the PSU being faulty , just I don't think the aerocool is good enough quality to be running an expensive component list like that on .

Worth trying though as you have a confirmed working psu sat there .

What case are you using ??

Is the system completely dead ?? Or is nothing powering on at all ? Not even the psu fan ?

I have tried the thermaltake psu and that gives me nothing either, I took everything apart from the mother board out and back in and still nothing. Bare bones. The only thing that happens is the front fan led’s come on for literally a fraction of a second. I’m back off to the shop where I bought the stuff from yesterday, see what they can suggest.

Yeah I’ve fiddled about with the front connectors, made sure + and - are correct but nothing. Thankyou for your advice, massive pain in the backside figuring it out.

+ & - orientation doesn't actually make any difference anyway mate, they're there simply to complete a circuit.

It looks like a 12v short somewhere to me,what case is it ?? you dont have any fan controllers etc plugged to the board at all anywhere ??

I would take the board out of the case, set it up on the box it came in (not on top of the anti static bag as its conductive- straight on the cardboard) plug in minimal components ,meaning simply cpu & ram ,plug monitor to onboard video & just the front panel connector to the case (orientate it so it will reach)

Yeah fair enough , your lucky to have a physical store close by, there's nothing within 50km of where I live nowadays.

Remember what I said about the psu , swap it for something better.

Thermaltake & aerocool are bottom rung of the ladder on quality.

Okay so I’m a dumba**. Only ever built with modular psu’s In the past. So apparently I put the gpu power into the motherboard and motherboard power into the gpu, killing the mobo and psu.

Luckily I think the cpu and gpu are fine but still a rookie error. Sorry for wasting everyone’s time.
