I recently bought a MSI Radeon RX 580 to upgrade from my old 2GB card. After installing, system booted slowly, noticeably slower than before. Once I got all the software and drivers installed (so I thought) I tried playing XCOM Enemy Unknown. The game ran flawlessly with the old card, although at medium settings. I started experiencing crashes, hard crashes to black screen then system shut itself off. After quite a bit of T/S I found a more recent driver on the manufacturer's website that enabled me to not only play the game but with near max settings. Before the driver update I could not even use higher than 1024x768 screen resolution in-game (but it ran). However, to my great disappointment I had another crash like before.
I am wondering if my new card might be pulling more power than the PSU can deliver especially after running hot for a few hours (fans spinning up, etc)?
This RX580 uses the 8-pin PCI-e connector, whereas my old card didn't need direct power connection at all. My question is, could lack of power be what is causing the crashes (black screen, buzzing sound, then PC shuts off)? Or, is it simply driver related/XCOM lack of optimization? Here are my specs:
MSI 990FXA Gaming MB
AMD FX-8370 CPU
PSU Seasonic S12 II Bronze - 520W
16 GB (2x8) Kingston HyperX RAM
WIN 10 Home Edition
NOTE: No overclocking at all.
