Should I try to OC my GPU with 20W left on my PSU?

*I'm taking all power specs off of pcpartpicker*

Here is my build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jM2nbj

I was going to try overclocking for the first time, except I don't know if my power supply can handle it. As you can see from the parts list, I have a 550W PSU, and my current draw is 528W.

I was going to overclock to hopefully gain a few FPS to push my graphic quality into the ultra settings in games. Do you think it is safe to do, and what programs do you recommend me downloading to test my overclock?

Thanks

More about gpu 20w left psu
  1. Either you PSU will turn off in overload or go bang http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story4&reid=438
Your max potential load should vary, as in jonnyguru his max load is 540, just there are variants between PSU (Im not saying that your should be that max but on your position i wouldnt take a chance if you don't want your psu go "Wild"), i suggest you not to.

  2. While I'm not sure where PC Part Picker is coming up the that wattage figure (the most the graphics card will take is 300w and the CPU is an 84 watt CPU), you generally want a lot more overhead than just 20 watts, even before overclocking. Personally, I'd say that system should take more than about 450 watts and at a minimum, you'd want a 550watt PSU. If you intended to overclock, then I'd recommend a 600-650watt PSU.

on anything newer you are not going to get ultra 1440p even with max OC'ed 290x

550w is bare minimum for your setup with no OC

you would need a gtx 1070 or better with an i7 for ultra 1440p ~60 fps

  4. In a power supply, you are about where I'd start to feel comfortable running that system as is. I would not overclock it without bumping the power supply up to 650ish. I don't believe in running power supplies at high loads even if they are rated for it. You always want some headroom especially doing things like overclocking.
