Hi Everyone - I have an old Dell Dimension E521 and i am looking to essentially use it as a base for a new build, ie. new motherboard that can handle a quadcore or at least a powerful dual core. This is more of a project / fun rebuild for me and ideally could use for work which consists of using some trading software, large excel / word docs and lots of browsing pages and multiple monitors extended.

Of course trying to stay with the original power source of the E521, if possible.

Any guidance would be appreciated and if someone has suggestions for keeping the existing motherboard and knows a powerful CPU upgrade, Socket AM2 compatibility, i wouldn't be against taking that route either.

Sorry, I meant the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ was the best one I could find for it.
So your CPU scores around 1000 on passmark.com. The 6000+ gets around 1600. So a decent bump that should be noticeable. I ran Windows 7 on it with no problems.

Thanks for the fast response!

It's the Athlon 64 x 2 3800 which is super weak. My grandma gave me the desktop and i figured it would be an OK start for a fun rebuild but of course could be wrong haha i don't even have a power cord right now

ahh - so the CPU upgrade is very limited for the socket AM2 it looks like. looks like i'll have to upgrade the motherboard so i can get an adequate CPU upgrade
