one of my laptops is acting up, I would like to format the hard drive so that I can reinstall win 7 - how can I format using a usb key

You can just select custom as the installation type when you boot from the W7 installation USB and then as the first step delete all existing partitions and install to the single remaining unpartitioned space. W7 will create the partition and format it prior to the installation automatically.
