Hi I'm upgrading my pc to an Intel i5 8400 and a gtx 1070 ti and thought what kind of powersupply do i need? I currently have an 500W EVGA 8+ Plus power supply so will it do or will i have to change?

Solution
Here's a few.

The S12II and M12II(non evo versions) technically don't support the ultra low power C6/C7 sleep states but that's an easy fix of just disabling those in the bios(many boards have them disabled by default).

A decent 550w psu(regardless of efficiency rating) would be fine. Just because a psu is advertised as being more effcient doesn't means it made with better quality components than a less efficient unit.

There aren't many less than gold rated units that i would recommend, but that's my personal preference.

I can think of atleast half dozen bronze rated units off the top of my head that would be good for the OP's specs.
Seasonic S12II
Seasonic M12II
Seasonic SS EVO
Antec HCG
Antec HCGm
XFX TS
Corsair CX and CXM(newer 550w models of course)
All bronze rated all decent options.

But we really need to know what unit the OP currently has and if it does need upgraded what the upgrade budget is.

Yes we do need to know what he's currently using. Are the CX series better now? I had a terrible string of bad luck with them in previous years, which made me avoid corsair. Had a few TX's go bad on me as well. My Hx1000i has been perfect, but not exactly a budget part.

The new CX and CXms(450, 550 and 650w models) use an upgraded platform with slightly better caps making them a decent budget option. I also had horrible luck with the old CXs and would not touch one with a 10ft pole.

Same here, i have a budget build coming up for a 12 year old looking to get into PC gaming, maybe i'll try one again since the prices aren't too bad.

I've got a 500W evga 80 plus that i bought new a little over a year ago.

The EVGA 500 W1 [100-W1-0500-KR] will do but it wasn't designed to support Intel Haswell or later processors' C6/C7 low power sleep states. The EVGA 100-W1-0500-KR's +5V rail will drop below the minimum +4.75V allowed by the ATX12V Power Supply Design Guide specifications when the system enters C6/C7 low power sleep state. This could trigger the PSU's UVP (Under Voltage Protection) circuit and the system will be unable to wake from sleep.

I thought about getting this one to get some headroom for upgrading so will it do just fine? https://pcpartpicker.com/product/Rp8H99/corsair-power-supply-cp9020091na

Yes. It's based on a modern platform with great electrical performance.
