Gigabit ethernet switch only providing 100Mb/s with a 200 Mb/s connection

Hello,

I recently acquired some smart home devices and the hub for them requires a wired ethernet connection. My router only has 1 ethernet out so I decided to get a switch. I purchased a Netgear GS605 Gigabit 5 port switch. My connection speed without the switch, directly into the router is 200Mb/s down and 35Mb/s up. When I plug in the switch the download speed goes down to 95~ Mb/s down and stays at 35 up. I tested the wireless to my devices with and without the switch and they stayed consistent at 200Mb/s so I imagine the issue is the switch. It says directly on the box that it supports 10/100/1000 Mb/s connections but I can't seem to get it, and it's an unmanaged switch so there aren't any specific ports or configurations I can play with.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get the full speed or do I need to buy something else? Thanks in advance

You likely have a bad cable. Cable can be partially defective and work on some devices and not others.

95m is a very common number when the port negotiated to 100m and since both devices have gigabit ports it has to be the cable.

Ya know, I received the extra ethernet cable that I was using with the switch. I bought some Cat6 cables and replaced the switch-router cable and boom, instantly went from 100-200 Mb/s.

That's crazy, it even said 5e on the cable that I replaced , which I thought was more than enough for 200 Mb/s. Thanks !

Cat5e is fine for gigabit, cat6 still only runs gigabit connected to gigabit ports. You can use cat6a for 10gbit but if you connect it to gigabit ports it will still run at 1gbit.

You just got unlucky with a cable. All it takes is 1 pin to be slightly loose or have a little to much dirt on it and it will drop to 100m. Even the most expensive cat7 cable you can find can have issues like that.
