Hi there, I am new to this site.. so please excuse me lol.

I recently purchased parts to build my first pc from scratch and put everything together. Though when i went to turn the unit on it booted for a second or two, fans, cpu fan and LEDs lit up then died on me. I emailed the supplier and they said I had an older cpu (intel Kaby lake) and that the intel coffee lake was the one compatible. I’m wondering if I could have damaged the motherboard (msi z370 m5)? iv had a look at the pins on board for the processor and they all sit at a slight angle which iv read is right? So I’m thinking of sending the cpu back and updating it or is there more to this issue?

Solution
It's simply a case of you needing a coffee lake CPU for that Z370 board and that's it. Or send the mobo back and get a Z270 based motherboard.

But the combo you have isn't going to work.
Physically, 7th gen fits just fine in 8th gen board, so you could not damage them just by installing CPU. However, pinout is different on 7th and 8th gen. While several people made same mistake as you, nobody claimed that either part was damaged in the process. However, I'm worried about the fact, that fans and leds went out after few seconds - in fact the rig should be running just fine, you just should have no display. It is possible you got DoA motherboard. Will it turn on now, without CPU?
