I’m really confused

I have an Intel Core i5 4670K Quad Core 3.40GHz, 6MB, Haswell, 84W CPU that I brought in 2014.

I have it inside a PC that I use primarily to play video games.

A friend of mine who works in the games industry as a developer insists that my processor will be as good, if not better than what will eventually find itself inside Sony’s inevitable PlayStation 5 console expected sometime between 2019/20.

This doesn’t make any sense to me. My processor must be aging by now (although combined with my Nvidia 1080 Ti GPU it runs all of the latest games in 4K at 60fps) and I keep hearing about all of these new intel CPU’s releasing lately that are far more advanced than what I currently have.

What exactly is going on? Is it just that CPU’s are no longer that important for gaming these days? after all, Microsoft’s new Xbox One X is said to incorporate a low speced CPU, (the same as the original 2013 Xbox One?)

Are GPU’s replacing the need for more advanced CPU’s?

Sorry, but I’m incredibly tech ignorant and just want to understand what is going on. I have upgraded my GPU and doubled my RAM since 2014, yet my CPU is performing incredibly well.

Consoles can survive on "lesser" CPU's than PC's can.

The games are optimized for a specific set of hardware.
And they also run at lower FPS that what is demanded by the PC gaming community.
But since they are 'optimized', you do not really notice the lower FPS.

And yes, the GPU does a lot of the work.
And yes, CPU performance increases are small, going from generation to generation.

The next model playstation is already well into development. It would not work for them to try to switch to the new shiny in midstream.
