Hi people,

I am planning to build a PC with the CoolerMaster Masterbox lite 5, for the front three fans, I wanted to go with RGB fans. Unfortunately, my motherboard, the MSI Z270‑A PRO ATX for LGA1151 doesn’t support RGB headers, meaning that I will need a fan controller. I am planning to buy the CoolerMaster RGB fan controller, CoolerMaster RGB fan controller Amazon link....

To choose my RGB fans, do I need to buy the CoolerMaster branded fans, or will I be able to buy other branded fans, such as the Corsair SP120 RGB. I am looking for a cheap RGB setup where each of the three fans can be individually configured through a software, where I can set colours and change fan speeds.

To sum up, my questions are...

  • Would any RGB fans work with the CoolerMaster RGB fan controller?
Will I be able to change each fan’s speed?
Finally, is there any cheaper option to this?

Thanks,
Sid.

No.
Only Cooler Master MasterFan Pro RGB series fans are compatible with it. Same is with other brands as well where with NZXT HUE+ you can only use NZXT AER RGB fans or with Corsair Lightning Node Pro, you can use only Corsair LL-series fans.

Will I be able to change each fan’s speed?
No.
RGB fan controller is used only to control LEDs inside Cooler Master's fans. All Cooler Master MasterFan Pro RGB series fans have 2 connectors: one for LEDs and another for fan. If you connect each fan wire to separate MoBo header then yes, you can control the fan speed individually from BIOS. But RGB fan controller doesn't offer any fan speed control.

That depends on where you live and the prices at your store. Usually, the less flexibility and customization options you have, the cheaper it will be. E.g Corsair SP120 RGB and HD RGB are at the low end with no software control over LEDs.

As far as other RGB fans go, here's a list of most of them,

I have NZXT HUE+ and AER RGB setup in use in my Skylake and Haswell builds. Full specs with pics in my sig.
