My entire computer has started freezing completely when I play games for an hour or more. I recently upgraded my CPU from an i5 4590 to an i7 4790k. My specs are; MSI B85-G43, 16gb ddr3 Kingston crucial 1600mhz, GTX 980ti Zotac AMP Extreme, 500w EVGA PSU, i7 4790k stock settings, Deepcool captain 240ex cooler. I have also recently done a fresh install to try and fix my issue.

The CPU going up and down in temp, clock speed, and voltage is normal if you have TurboBoost on. When you installed your CPU did you remove any other components? I've seen freezes like this sometimes when RAM, PCI, or PCIe cards aren't quite seated properly.

You probably want to try a BIOS update first.

Sounds to me it's a CPU issue since it just started happening once you installed the 4790K. Is your bios fully up to date? Hows it looking in CPU-Z? clock speed, voltage?

I know my BIOS isn't up to date, I checked it earlier because I read it could be an issue but I couldn't see anything in the bios update notes that would have suggested any support for my cpu. I could be completely wrong as I have never done a bios update. My voltage jumps to around 1.160ish when I am in the tower on destiny 2. Clock speeds go from 4ghz to 4.4 on and off

I just checked the msi website... Apparently in the update after the one I have, there is something called a haswell cpu refresh update. I am guessing that's support for my cpu as it's classed as a haswell.

Don't think the update will fix your issue, but you should update it anyways for system stability.

How many bios revisions are you behind? When it's boosting stock vcore should be around 1.28ish volts.

Estimable
If it's only happening in prolonged gaming my first thought would be the CPU is overheating due to an issue with the cooler installation. The only part of the system that changed was the CPU. I'd have a look at the temps in game to see where they are at. If temps are OK I'd do a BIOS update next.
