Hi. I usually leave my PC on overnight while it does things for games and i woke up this morning to see it turned off. I turn it on and the PSU ticks in then off instantly. I hear one tick, all fans on for half a second then off.

I got this pc at the end of 2014.
Specs:
i7 4790k
GTX 980
12gb ram (x3 4gb)
MSI Z97-G55 SLI
Cooler master V750

Would appreciate any help as i don't want to lose this pc...

Yeah. To clear cmos it said to short the pins so i used a screw driver after removing the plug. Didn't do anything. I tried taking out the battery and holding power button for 15 secs, nothing. There is now no GPU and one ram stick and no lights or fans turned on at all while doing these.

Did you hold the power button to drain the capacitors before attempting to short the jumper?
Shouldn't cause an issue, but still, a possibility.

To clear the CMOS (other than the jumper), you have to remove the battery and wait. 10 minutes ideally, not 15 seconds.

Hmm, odd. Honestly, I'm not sure. good quality PSU, so *shouldn't* be that (but possible).

Since you have an AIO, I'm wondering if the pump has failed..... might trigger these symptoms, although I'm not convinced.

Could you connect a fan (rather than the pump) to the CPU_Fan header? Wouldn't suggest running like that, obviously - you wouldn't get far.
BUT, if it allows the system to boost better/further, we might be on to something.

While it *might* help, old thermal paste isn't going to be the difference (overnight) between a working and non-working system. You would've experienced temperature increases over time, throttling and (potentially) forced shutdowns long before old, drying out thermal paste would result in a failure to post.
