So, if you had a choice, which is better overall:

6 gigs (3 sticks 2 gigs each) of DDR3-1066 ram which will run in triple channel mode?

16 gigs of (2 sticks of 8 gigs each) DDR3-1600 ram in dual channel mode?

Obviously, 1600 > 1066, but when it comes to triple channel vs dual channel, I'm not sure.

Running Xeon X5670 on the above mentioned Mobo.

Thanks!

Depends on your goal. Do you need the capacity or do you need the speed? I would think the 1600 might offer more bandwidth despite not being triple channel.

I would lean towards the 16GB, but you'll need to check the board's compatibility with single side or double sided 8GB modules. When I had it pretty sure 4GB sticks were the normal maximum, so up to 24GB memory fully populated.

If you are trying to plug in late model DDR3, that might be odd. When that board came out DDR3 1600 was available, but it was basically the fastest memory on the market, and required 1.65 volts to run. If the DDR3 kit you are intending to install runs at 1.5 it should be better, but it might not be 100% compatible.
