Hey there! In my current configuration, I have an EVGA Supernova 1200. The PSU has four (4) 6-pin SATA power outlets. I have five (5) HDDs, one (1) SSD, one (1) optical, and a radiator that are powered by SATA power connectors. I'm currently using all four (4) SATA power outlets to power everything, but I was thinking about buying a SATA power splitter (e.g. https://tinyurl.com/y7ghu5l7) in order to decrease the bulk of cables I'm running from the PSU. Does anyone know how many drives one can power using a 6 pin SATA power outlet? I contacted EVGA, and they said three (3). The guy told me he can't tell me anything outside of spec, so I'm thinking the actual answer might be more than three (3).

Solution
what you need to find out from the power supply vendor if each sata cable is self powered from the power supply the wattage and amp per cable if there plugged in by them self. if it one cable and has 4 plugs on it you still need the voltage and amp from the power supply for that sata cable but also the wire gauged used. you have to see what gauge it is to see the amp rating of the wire. then you have to sit down and do some math to see how much amps your pulling thought the wires. to much and you melt them. if you have another cable that has just molex on them i would use that so you dont over heat or over draw the sata cables.

They ARE all powered.

Current setup:

SATA Cable 1: Power to three (3) HDDs
SATA Cable 2: Power to two (2) HDDs + one (1) optical
SATA Cable 3: Power to SSD
SATA Cable 4: Power to 280mm radiator + case fans

My question is how many drives can I power using one SATA cable? I would like to get rid of one of the cables, and power all five (5) HDDs + one (1) optical on the same cable.

The PSU is also equipped with a number of Molex (4-pin) connectors. Could they be used for your case fans and might free up one of the existing SATA cables?

The StarTech splitter cable should work as well. We've used the same model on a number of installations.
