Hi members,

At my work we have an older computer that was not being used anymore. I decided to check out if it was still working.

Windows 7 Pro couldn't be started, so I decided to put it in an external case I have, to get off some files my company still needed. After that I completely formatted the hdd to later install Windows again, by downloading the official one from the website and boot the installiation from usb.

The problem is that the BIOS does not detect the hdd for some reason. I swapped cables with the DVD-drive which did get detected, didn't work. It does start and I hear it running, but still no detection. After that I putted the hdd in my external case again and connected it to the pc via usb and then it did get detected.

I tried installing Windows via USB but the installation does not allow me to install on a usb drive.

After restarting the computer again with the external hdd running, it only shows the bios screen, but without any instruction for buttons (F2 Bios F7 Bios update etc), as soon as I turned the external hdd off it showed. Went into bios and put the external hdd on and it just freezes. Turn it off and you can go through the menu again.

Also tried another internal harddisk from myself (that used to be in the external case) and gets detected in BIOS.

I have absolutely no clue what is going on here. Hdd seems to be working perfectly fine in an external case but as soon as it goes internal it doesn't work.

Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 hdd
Intel Desktop Board DB75EN motherboard
Intel Core i5-3330 processor
Corsair Value Select 8GB DDR3
Corsair VS350 Powersupply

Hmm definitely sounds like some funky things going on here. Since you've got the drive able to be detected in the external case, do this and then try running SeaTools on it to scan the health of the drive.

There is also software out there which can help you get Windows going on an external drive, you'd just have to do some search engine magic to find out which one people recommend.

Problem is sadly still not solved. I actually dont want to install Windows on an external drive, since I was planning to sell to PC. Only thing I need to get working is the HDD internally.

How come that the Seatools program shows unknown when I plug in the HDD. With the other HDD it actually showed the Model Number and Firmware version.
Is it that there is no firmware on the harddisk anymore maybe?
