New graphics card yet way worse performance

I've just bought a new 980ti, as a subtitute for my 960, yet it's been terrible! The card is running at 85C on load (without OCing), while thermal throttling. Most games have shown a significant fps boost but, all of them have also shown a lot of instability, crashes and massive fps drops. What do I do?
My PC:
i5 4670k
8GB DDR3 RAM
GTX 980TI AMP! Edition
Z97 FATAL1TY
1TB HDD

Solution
Seems you have a defective GPU, sorry. Do you still have your 960? If so, I would suggest seeing if you can RMA the GPU and getting the manufacturer to replace it. If that is not an option, you might want to remove the heatsink and apply new thermal compound.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that, it's a 600w EVGA 80plus PSU. The CPU has maintained cool, running at 63C on load. I am able to OC the GFX card and the CPU, not both at once though. I was trying to OC the GPU but it was way too unstable, had to restart my PC like 20 times...

With all devices (CPU, GPU, and memory) at stock speeds, how hot does your GPU get? If you remove the side of your case while operating, does the GPU temperature drop at all? This last question is to determine if you have an airflow issue.

My GPU runs at 82-85C while on load, and no, it does not change with or without the side panel on. I have all the fan slots in my HAF 912 filled with working fans.

The card was used for over a year, so I bought it used. At 100% the temps still sit at that 82-85C spot, not dropping at all

I checked with the guy that sold me the card, he told me it ran completly fine, though he doesn't know at what temps it ran at. I am not sure if it still has warranty I'll check. I still have the 960 though, I guess I'll try that too. Thanks mate!
