Constant GPU crashing

stumbled upon this forum and i'm hoping somebody here will be able to help me with a problem that's gone on way too long.

i had my pc built about 5 years ago, and pretty much for the full 5 years i've had the same problem. my gpu will often crash while playing games and occasionally when looking at webpages as well. the difference between my issue and others that i've read about though, is that the crashes only last about a second, and there's absolutely no pattern or rhythm to when they happen. what happens is that the screen will black out for a second with the "gpu driver has stopped responding and recovered" message popping up. this could happen 5 times within 30 seconds or once during a 6hr sesh. it also makes no difference at all how visually demanding the game is.

drivers are always up to date. tried replacing it with a completely different card (have an nvidia card and swapped it for an amd) exact same issue. bought a new motherboard and same issue. i've handed it over to a very tech-savy friend more than once, and every time he was convinced he figured it out this time only for it to start doing its thing as soon as i got it back.

needless to say, i'm at a loss. anybody have any ideas?

Solution
When swapping brands, make sure to remove the previous brand driver, so in this case, make sure to uninstall Nvidia drivers if you are switching to AMD, because conflicts can occur.
