Hello,

I'm hoping someone with a wealth of experience can help me as i'm trying too distinguish what is wrong with my custom build, spec below. I made this PC about a year ago and its been fine up until now, i'm wondering if I have a fault with my MOBO, It's an ASUS Maximus VIII Ranger.
Recently my PC has started to ignore bootup/gets stuck in cold boot? I press the power button and nothing happens. The level of severity can range from me having to turn it off (let the power drain) turn it back on two maybe three times and it will finally power up too full on rage inducing hours spend turning it off and on, reseting CMOS, resetting BIOS, unplugging all unnessissary hardware etc until I get some life out of it.

I contacted ASUS customer service who offered no help what so ever, they just said I need to go back to the retailer to look for repair or a replacement, obviously this could take days if not weeks before I can get my PC rebuilt so I want to know if anyone else has experienced this issue and if it was indeed the MOBO before i pull my build apart.

Here's what I've tried so far:
resetting the BIOS to begin with seemed to be the optimal way of getting some life back into the PC but eventually one time it went into a complete coma where it took me two days to get it going again. I read that maybe my BIOS settings were corrupted or out of date. They indeed were out of date, so I flashed the BIOS through the BIOS itself, using the handy on board connect to internet and download feature these new ASUS boards have. But after it installed the new update it went into another coma. After another day of off/on work on my PC i manged to get it going again and it indeed did do the update. I thought this solved the issue (It didn't >.<)

I've pulled out bits of hardware that I thought may be causing issues, maybe damaged RAM, GPU etc anything that could be at fault and causing it to not boot. everything else seems fine.

Once i do get my PC going it runs fine, Plays high end games no problem, no instability etc so I'm struggling to understand what the fault could be.

Spec is:
Intel I5 6600K
Asus Maximus VIII Ranger
Nvidia Geforce 1070 TI
Corsair Dominator platinum 16GB 3000mhz
XFX XTR 850W PSU
Corsair 780T Case
Windows 10 64bit

any help is much appreciated as this issue is driving me up the wall!

Cheers
J

Solution

Since your operating system is on that faulty drive, it would explain your problems booting the machine.
There is a QCode LED on the MB (top right) that shows a sequence of letters and numbers during Post cycle.
Observe the codes and if Post stops during Boot then report this code. It helps to identify errors during post cycle.
Other things can also cause your symptoms and will have to be checked.
A dead or dying CMOS battery.
A failing DIMM.
Poor power supply or system instability and can be caused by incorrect Bios settings.
Did you clear CMOS back to default after Bios flash.?

Hmm could be, I have two HDDs both are quite old and are the weakest part of my build. I’ve been needing to upgrade to SSD’s for a while.
Is there anyway I can confirm if the HDD is failing?

hdtune and vendor test will see if the drives are dying. on your issue if it not a weak cmos battery it can be the power supply or or power good line on the mb. most time if the mb working it may be the power supply. another issue if your gpu is an evga video card you may have one that know to have issues. the gpu may be pulling more then 75v from the pci slot and tripping the asus power surge.have the issue shown up with just onboard video??? another no post with newer mb is to much power pulled from usb ports. make sure only a mouse and keyboard are on at post. if you have a lot of usb devices look into a powered hub.

Ah ok, well when it was getting stuck in cold boot it would often boot up the fans and start to run post. It often got to "55" on the Qcode LED and then shut down. The pins on the RAM look fine, i wonder if one of the slots is damaged?

Pretty sure i reset CMOS settings, would best place to start be a new CMOS battery?

Download a free program called Hard Disk Sentinel. It will analyze all your HDD's for bad sectors and give you a health status report for each drive.

Sweet, I'll try HDtune when i get home from work to try and rule that out.
Yeah my 1070TI is a EVGA... and thinking about it, this issue began not long after I installed the new GPU, its only about a month old.
Although when the PC has got stuck at cold boot, I have tried removing the GPU and using just onboard and it has still failed to boot up.

may have to contact or read up on the EVGA...
