The motherboard on my pc died and I decided now would be a good time to upgrade. I can't seem to find any real advice on if its ok to move one of the hard drives from my old pc to my new one. My friends which have been using computers longer than me have all said that the drive needs to be wiped before I can put it in my new pc. Is this really the case? The hard drive in question doesn't have my os on so I thought it would be fine but wanted to check.

Yes, you can move the old HDD to the new PC as long as the interfaces match up. If there are some programs on it that relied on the original OS, they may not work, however. Likewise with data files that were required by apps on the old system. But if it contains say... pictures or personal documents, you should be able to read them with the new OS if it has the required program.
