I need to print down near the bottom of the paper. My KX-P1123 allows me to turn off the out of paper sensor & do that, but the head is failing. I want to replace it with my 2023, but I can't figure out how to turn off the out of paper sensor. Alternately I would be willing to disconnect the physical sensor if I knew how.

Not sure that I understand yoru post per se. Turning off an out of paper sensor will not allow you to print more on any given physical page.

Disconnecting the sensor (if possible) is likely to have the same result as a "failed" sensor.

What software are you using to print? Any control over the printer's header's and footer's? Margin controls? Either via the application or the printer?

And some mechanical issue, i.e., "the head is failing", makes almost everything else moot.

Take a closer look at the application you are using to print the intended document. You might be able to squeeze in just a bit more via something such as changing a size from 100% to 95%. Minimize margins.

Experimenting is usually required if the objective is to get the printed output to fit on one physical 8.5" x 11" page.

Or whatever page standard you are using.

I am using an 1123 which has some pins not printing. I want to use the 2023, which prints just fine except it won't print the last line or 2 of my service tickets(which are approx 3 1/3 inches tall) but stops and gives an out of paper error. I am printing from a DOS based program. On the 1123 I can turn the sensor off from software and it works just fine. I want to know how to turn off the sensor from software, if possible(like a batch file command when I turn it on in the morning, that's also how I set it to print condensed mode, or if I can find the sensor, figure out how to trick it into thinking there is still paper in front of it.

Service tickets being continuous perforated form feed documents 3 1/3" x 8 1/2" in size - correct?

Or do you manually feed in each service ticket in one at a time?

Are the service tickets a proprietary form that you must purchase to fit the DOS based program?

What software do you now use to turn off the paper sensor in the 1123? Or set the 1123 to print in condensed mode?

My thought is that the DOS based program is inserting some PCL (Printer Command Language) code when output is sent to the 1123. Proprietary in that the program output will only fit the forms provided. And the 2023 does not respond to the PCL being used...

E.g.,(for reference purposes):

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/bpl10629

Did not note any commands related to paper sensors per se....

Lots of other commands to control print spacing and so forth.

Many questions to be sure.

However the problem is twofold:

1) Determining if the 2023 truly can be controlled in the same manner as the 1123, and

2) figuring out how (if possible) to implement/execute that control. Directly via some PCL workaround that can be leveraged in.

And I did find the following:

https://www.pcworldbusiness.co.uk/catalogue/item/Panasonic+KX-P+2023+-+printer+-+B-W+-+dot-matrix/P111263P

Note the reference to the set-up disk under the description tag.

"The KX-P2023 also features the EZ Set operator panel and set-up disk that let you control all of the printer's features, including font, pitch, form length, enhancement and emulation mode."

Do you have the set-up disk for the 2023? The disk software may allow you to configure the 2023 more precisely.

I appreciate the effort you have put into attempting to answer my question. I apologise if I haven't been clear in how I'm doing things.

I manually feed 3 1/3 by 8 1/2 inch pieces of paper, on which the DOS based program which I wrote long ago in Turbo Basic prints a service ticket. Then when the repair is done, I prints the parts, prices, total etc. on the back.

I can do a lot of things by sending codes to the printer, like ESC+SI puts it in condensed mode. But I mis-spoke in an earlier post when I implied that's how I turned off the sensor (it's been 3 years since I last had to do that. I forgot until I looked it up just now). Turning off the paper sensor on the 1123 is done from the front panel. Unfortunately the 2023 doesn't have as extensive a front panel control as the 1123 or 2123, which also works for me. But of the 2 2123s I own, 1 won't advance paper. And I only have 1 ribbon for it, although they are still available and if I can't figure out how to use the 2023 I will buy a case and use it. I have 3 cases of new ribbons for the 1123-2023 machines, plus a couple of dozen used ribbons I've been rejuvenating. I also own a working 1124, but it doesn't take single sheets like the others. I've been accumulating Panasonic printers from friends and on e-bay. I have some 9 pin, but they don't print acceptably in condensed mode. I also have a wd35, which was apparently the Canadian version of the 1123, which I am scrapping for parts. The currently failing printhead in the 1123 came from it. The original 1123 printhead disintegrated years ago, I pressed the wd35 into service until water from a fire upstairs 3 years ago leaked through the ceiling and ruined it. I went to my backup, the 2123 until I was able to switch printheads and put the 1123 back in service. I always like to have a working backup, as old stuff can fail. I bought the 1123 new about 30 years ago, the others were all used. I don't believe I got a setup disk with the 2023. Nothing in the instruction book said anything about being able to turn off the paper sensor from software, but if it's possible I'd like to know. The 1123 book told me exactly how to do it on the front panel.

The 1123 book also mentioned that its paper sensor is under the platen. If the 2023 sensor is also there, does anyone know the best way to get to it? Or if it's elsewhere, how to get to it?

Or if anyone has a working Panasonic kx-p1123 or kx-p2123 they want to sell cheap, I'd buy it (I'm in Illinois. Probably don't want to ship one from overseas and need 110 volt, not 220). There were several as-is on e-bay (I've all ready got non-working printers, I don't need more), 1 in England, and 1 or 2 pretty pricey ones.

My overall sense is that you are being "overtaken" by events.

Very good chance that you could redo your service ticket system via Visual Basic or even Microsoft Access. Especially since you have the skill level to work with Turbo Basic.

Make the printer/printer paper issue moot.

May seem to be a nuisance or overall more complex to redo the service ticket system but it may be that doing so is not as difficult as you imagine.

Especially if you run the old system as "legacy" and do everything else on the new system. Phasing out legacy as you go.

There is comfort in the old and sometime the old is "better". However, "better" is subjective and if the 1123 and 2023 are causing such problems then you need to take a look at the bigger picture and revamp your procedures and practices.

Do so before you really are forced to do so. Waiting is very likely to make it all even more difficult.

You are right, I could eliminate some of the lines so it didn't need all 22 lines, but I want all 22 lines. the 1123 is usable and my 2123 works fine. I would just like to be able to use the 2023 (it uses the same ribbons as the 1123, and I have 3 cases of unopened ribbons for them). I can buy a working 1123 or 2123 on Ebay if I want to spend some real money, I was just hoping someone had a solution. I will probably disassemble the 2023 further until I find the sensor.

PS: I at one time used HP IIp+ laser printers (I had 2 working & 3 for parts) but I couldn't fix those myself & they kept failing so I went back to the dot matrix. Any printer that accepts a parallel interface, allows me to set it for condensed printing, will allow me to feed a 3 1/3 inch sheet of paper manually, and print 22 lines on it, that I can still get ribbons or toner cartridges for will work for me. I just have the Panasonics and they have worked well, and I have the ribbons. But I can buy ribbons for the 2123, or some other printer if they're available.

Noted:

"I could eliminate some of the lines so it didn't need all 22 lines, but I want all 22 lines."

Understandable but reconsider: "Never let form get in the way of function".

Makes things simpler and the ticket/page size becomes moot....

And do take a look at the command options per The Paladin's post.
