Hello, I am looking to upgrade to 16gb of RAM this Christmas and am not sure which setup would work best. I currently have 2 4gb sticks but am not sure if I should get 2 more 4 gb sticks or 1 8gb stick. The 8gb stick is cheaper and leaves me with one slot , so that may be better. Thanks

There is never any guarantee that mixed RAM will work. To minimise risk it's best to stick with the same brand and timings as your existing RAM but even then there is a chance it won't work. 3 sticks will mean the RAM performs slower because you need pairs for dual channel working so 4 is better.

It's very hit and miss, some people stick any old combo of RAM sticks in and get away with it, others try multiple times and can't find a combination that'll work together. How often it goes which way I don't have any info on, but I've definitely run into these issues myself.

Sorry to be an alarmist, but there are definitely risks. The absolute safest way to upgrade is to buy a whole new RAM kit and sell the old RAM
