GPU doesn't work for 100% when game is in window mode.

Hi,

When I want to record any game, I have to put the game in 1280x720 window mode, because my monitor is 1440x900. But when I do this my game will start to run poorly (40-50 fps), that's because my gpu only works at 40-50% then. Even if I change my settings to low, it will still run on a low framerate.

The weird thing is that this doesn't happen when I play in fullscreen mode (when I am not recording). If I then lower my settings, the frame rate does increase. Also the GPU works most of the time at 100% then.

Do you guys have a solution or explanation for this?
(I don't think this is a bottleneck)

PC Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K
CPU Cooler: Be quiet! Pure Rock
GPU MSI Radeon RX480 Gaming X 8G
Motherboard: MSI Z370 A PRO
RAM: Kingston 8GB 2400MHz
PSU: Cooler Master B500 v.2
HDD: Hitachi HDE721010SLA330 (7200 RPM)
SSD: MK0060EAVDR (Don't know the full name, but it is from HP)
Case: Sharkoon VG5-W

In this case the game played is PUBG.

What are you using to record specifically?

Depending on the method, it may be your RAM utilization rather than being in "windowed mode".
Another potential would be CPU, but I can't think of any recording method that would use more than maybe 1or2 cores/threads.

Are you monitoring utilization, other than just the GPU?

I use OBS Studio to record (x264 encoder). I monitor everything via Taskmanager, but especially the GPU.

And.....how does RAM utilization look? Task manager isn't ideal for utilization overall, but can give you a decent enough idea most of the time.

What titles are you talking about specifically? And at what settings?

Remember, when windowing, you're dropping your resolution.
1280x720 = 921,600 pixels
Compared to 1440x900 = 1,296,000 pixels.

Lowering resolution does not always increase FPS linearly. If CPU/RAM utilization isn't a problem (CPU shouldn't be), I'd try turning up your in-game settings.

My ram is at 70 to 80% most of the time. The game I am playing is Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds. I already tried turning up my settings, it doesn’t get worse, but also not better. But if I play in fullscreen mode then changing the settings does something with the framerate. Also in fullscreen mode the fps is way higher (70-100 on high settings).
