If the laptop is brand-new, it will most likely be set to very aggressive power conservation settings by default ('Green mode').

Open the Settings app and select System. In the menu to the left, select Power & sleep. Now you can change the settings for Screen and Sleep. If you need to make detailed changes, select 'Additional power settings' in the menu to the right. This will open the Power Options page in Control Panel. You can click 'Change power plan' and change the settings for On battery and Plugged in.

If you need even more control, you can click 'Change advanced power settings' and open a dialog with lots of power settings. One thing to check is when the hard disk turns off (plugged in and on battery).

Even so, you should be...

Even so, you should be able to wake up the laptop simply by pressing a random key or swiping across the touchpad.
