So to start off, here's my current rig:

She's a little dated, but has been working nicely. Problem is that M5A97's VRM is now apparently overheating. It's worked great for well over a year, yet the 8350 is now deciding to set the roof (rather the VRM) on fire whenever I play or do something more intensive. First found out on 7 Days to Die with 16 zombies per player at 3 players during a blood moon and the whole lot crashed with the 8350 sizzling at around 80 Celsius reported temp. Something that shouldn't have happened since I've done far worse in the past 2 years on the same motherboard/CPU combo. Now it's apparently a fun habit. Boggles me why it waited this long.

I replaced the thermal paste to no avail. Have a Corsair H100i GTX I could drop on it, but that won't help the VRM any. Rather than blow money on outdated products or risk this recurring - it's looking like I need up upgrade. Since it's looking like i5-8400s are sold out pretty much everywhere, I'm thinking on a Ryzen 5 1600x or Ryzen 7 1800x (if a few things I have to sell go for a decent amount). An i7-8700k would be nice...it's just a ways out of my price range. Aiming for $600 to $700 total for this upgrade. Also going to be getting that 16GB of Corsair RAM in DDR4-2666 since I can find that cheaper than DDR4-2400.

Where I'm a tad lost is a motherboard. Too many choices and I don't have many needs to filter them down. I don't care about integrated graphics or sound, the ATX form factor are plentiful, LAN is a given and wifi is optional, no need for SLI (I'll just grab a 1080 down the road if needed) and anything beyond 2x USB 3.0 ports, 2x SATA ports and 4 PCIe slots will be excess. I just need something to keep everything running smooth for a long while to come; no breakneck FPS required beyond my allergy to the screen jitters. So I need some suggestions!

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response (and wish I had the time to respond sooner). I think I'll go with a Ryzen setup since it gives me the playing room to get a newer case, and it doesn't look like I can exactly go wrong with either it or the i5. I'm not really concerned with grand number crunching. Just a smooth and beautiful ride.

I do have a question about the MSI x370 Gaming Plus board, though. The MSI x370 Gaming Pro Carbon doesn't cost that much more and has a more intriguing design (and the lighting will go better with my rig). Aesthetics aside, would it be a mistake to go with Pro Carbon over the plus? I'm not seeing that many differences aside from a couple extra bells and whistles, different LAN chip and the lighting.
