I just got an i5-8600K with a Gigabyte z370XP SLI MB and I'm trying to overclock it. I've followed the steps here: https://overclocking.guide/gigabyte-z370-overclocking-coffee-lake/ just with a lower clock speed. The BIOS says that it is at 4.2ghz but once I log in it maxes at 3.6, CPU-Z says its 8-42 but stays at 36 under a load. I've never Overclocked before, so I'm not going for an insane number, just something a bit better.

Solution
This looks like a power setting. Remeber the 8600K clocks up and down depending on load. For a quick overclock, go into bios and set the CPU multiplyer to 46 for and all core 4.6GHz overclock and make sure XMP is set to profile 1 as long as you have DDR 4 memory over 2666Mhz. Leave everything else in auto, save and exit the bios and then tell me what is happening. Make sure you power profile in Windows is in the middle.

I reset my power plan to default and it worked. Unfortunately can't get 4.6ghz, the temp gets too high for comfort. Thanks for the help!

No problems at all...If you get a good CPU cooler, you will have no problems overclocking to 4.9/5GHz. I have the AIO watercooler and run at 4.9GHz with max temps at load never going past 65 Degrees C under P95 v26.6 and RealBench and AIDA..All the very best...

What aio cooler are you using? i have the h100i v2 with 4 corsair ml on it in push pull will be on the same cpu at 4.6 in your opinion do you think this would keep the temps at least below 65c-70c? its in a corsair 760t all fans are corsair ml 120/140 with great airflow.
actually need it for 1440p 144hz with my 1080 Ti
