I know that this mobo is old, but I am stretching out its life. Still does the overwhelming majority of what I need to do. However, I am upgrading my hard drives and have a problem with the SATA ports.

Old c: drive is Western Digital 640 GB, 5400 rpm, SATA II, plugged into SATA port 1.

New drive is Western Digital Blue 1TB, 7200 rpm, SATA iii, plugged into Marvell 88se9123 SATA III controller port 1.

I am having major problems getting the new drive to boot from the SATA III port. Is the Marvell controller such trash that I have to ignore it? Will the board only boot from the main SATA ports? Is there much speed difference if I just plug everything into the Intel SATA II ports?

Any comments and/or discussion would be appreciated (and yes, I know that the best solution is a new motherboard, but just not in the cards now).

Solution
No problem. Mechanical limitations don't give SATA 3 a significant advantage over the SATA 2 with HDDs. And the Marvell controller on your board is not the best in its class. I'd use the Intel and call it.

That is what I am falling back on. But I had hoped to optimize the new drives (I am installing two) with the onboard SATA 3 ports. Unfortunately, I am now reading a whole lot of stuff online (that I was not aware of in past years) that the Marvell controllers (at least from that era) are crappy. There are no new drivers from Marvell, and ASUS has been no help either.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience using these older Marvell SATA ports, especially for the boot drive.

Sorry, had to pick up kids. The Intel ports (6) are SATA 2. The Marvell controller ports (2) are SATA 3. The new drive is SATA 3, and I hoped for maxing out the transfer performance. I have not bothered using the Marvell ports in the past, because I had (still have) older hard drives. But the Marvell ports don't seem to be working properly -- a cloned drive does not want to boot from them -- and I don't know if I am doing something wrong, or if the Marvell controller just sucks.

It may not make much difference in the real world, but I am a bit offended to have two SATA 3 ports that dont seem to work as I want them to.
