Hi
Hi

I am looking to see if my current PC motherboard will take an M.2 SSD over a SATA?

Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks

that's a slippery slope. any motherboard that would work with an i7-2600 won't have a M.2 slot. I thinkt hat the first boards were the z97 boards...so you would have to replace you motherboard and CPU. the newer 170 and 270 boards would work better, but you'll have to replace your ram as well. look into the PCIe adapters and storage options...

no...that's a new 270 motherboard...it will work with he new coffee lake CPU's...like an i7-8700. so a new CPU, new motherboard and new ram would set you back $600 or so. what do you need M.2 ssd speeds for? that won't make a bit of difference in 99% of windows applications or 100% of games...editing or graphic design applications is where you'll notice it.

mmm. Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree then. I do the occasional DAW recording.
I have about £300 budget so maybe stick with DDR3 for now and get a sata SSD.
Any recommendation for a new motherboard that can take 32gig RAM?

SATA SSD will be perfect for your budget. M.2 ssd's seem really impressive at 2,000-3,000mbs speeds, but nowhere will you see that. Windows is coded for the masses and they still have to make it work on old mechanical HDD.

You shouldn't need any more RAM than 16gb. unless you have a lot of tabs open at once. getting 32gb of DDR3 ram will be very expensive. they really all moved on to DDR4 now. 32gb of DDR3 will run you $300 alone. motherboard would be another $200 or so. depending on what you want to do upgrade wise (what are you looking to improve?) you might be stuck with only buying a SATA SSD
